AZ Sleep – Providing an Alternative to the CPAP Machine

Dr. Stan Farrell now aiding additional patients with effective sleep apnea treatments

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AZ-TMJ has become a top authority in the treatment of TMJ and is opening a new division concentrating on sleep apnea treatments. AZ Sleep focuses on the proper treatment of sleep apnea and its side effects through less invasive procedures.

Sleep apnea is a disorder impairing a person’s ability to breathe, often resulting in restless sleep, snoring and an inability to feel rested. “Approximately 1 in 5 adults have mild sleep apnea and we have seen a close correlation between it and TMJ issues. I am happy to expand our practice allowing us to offer treatments and relief to a larger segment of the population,” Dr. Farrell explains.

Traditionally, a Positive Airway Pressure Unit (CPAP) was used to treat sleep apnea symptoms. The CPAP is a mask which straps over the head and blows oxygen into the lungs. Unfortunately, 50–80% of patients have trouble tolerating the CPAP. This is serious, as patients face potentially life-threatening health dilemmas. As an alternative, Dr. Farrell fabricates customized intraoral devices used to enlarge the pharynx and hold the jaw in an optimum position. This allows significant improvement in airflow.

As an additional service, through durable medical equipment (DME) billing, Dr. Farrell can bill patients’ medical insurance and aid programs directly to provide them with the sleep apnea devices they require. The type of appliance used and the skill of the practitioner fabricating, fitting and adjusting the appliance ultimately determine its success.
